Table football rules: learn the rules of table football with ease - Mister Babyfoot

Table football is a friendly and warm game that requires a certain amount of expertise, whether it's with pub rules during evening games with friends or with official rules during competitive matches, or for the more meticulous. As you probably know, the goal of table football, or miniature football, is to score more goals than the opposing player or team with all the balls at the start. These can be made of cork or plastic, depending on where you are (indoor or outdoor, friendly match in a bar or cafe, or competitive match, etc.).

Good to know:
The referee has full authority during a game of table football and their decisions are final. Therefore, if a player behaves in an inappropriate or "unsportsmanlike" manner or tends to request time-outs too often, the referee may request either a goal penalty or a temporary expulsion.

How do you start a foosball game?

A foosball game begins with a toss: the player who wins the toss decides which side to start. The very first ball is thrown against the wood of the foosball table to start the game and begin shooting to score goals.
Each round is punctuated by a change of ends, and the player who starts the kickoff is the one who did not start the kickoff in the previous round to ensure rotation and fairness.

Changing Positions on a Team

In foosball, according to the official rules, changing positions on a team, whether forward, back, or forward, is only possible between a goal scored and the subsequent kickoff.

- The restart in foosball? How to restart after going out

If the table football ball goes out, this is considered a stoppage of play and it must therefore be restarted in one of the corners of the side where it went out.

Restarting after a stoppage

If the ball gets stuck between two halfbacks, the ball is restarted against the wood of the table football.
If it remains stuck and is inaccessible to both sides, it is restarted in the back of the side where it got stuck. The same applies if, during a shot, it gets stuck in the goalkeeper's cage.

If there is any doubt about any of these elements, or even in general, the referee will draw lots.

What is a "ready" request?

In the official rules, a throw-in must always be preceded by the question "ready?" and wait for confirmation from the players to ensure that all players are ready and alert to continue the game and that none of them are "caught by surprise."

- What are the most popular shots in foosball for scoring goals?

Foosball Squirts

A squirt is when you score with the full-backs while the opposing defenders are as far apart as possible on the same side. Considered too easy, this shot is prohibited by the rules of indoor foosball... but is allowed during competitive games!

Roulette

Roulette involves performing one or more rotations with the poles or releasing the handles to surprise your opponents and score a goal at full speed. With roulette, opposing defenders have little chance of blocking your shot because, even if executed well, it's a very fast shot, and with a lot of force, the ball can become uncontrollable.

Is roulette allowed in foosball?

In the official rules created by the FFFT (French Table Football Federation), roulette is a shot that is only permitted in certain cases. In fact, the roulette wheel is only allowed in foosball if it only spins once before hitting the ball, and not after.

This is a very specific rule because, if it's done haphazardly, the ball gains too much speed, leaving your opponent absolutely no chance!

However, in pub rules, it's not often regulated, which can lead to grumbling from your opponents because it's not very fair play.

The Halfback Shot in Foosball

During matches, shooting from a member of the halfback bar (intentionally or accidentally) is considered a goal in the following cases:

  • - If the opposing team has deflected the ball with its Halfbacks
  • - If the halfbacks score an own goal
  • - If the ball hits the goal, bounces off the opposing fullbacks, and finally lands in the goal

The Halfbacks' Block

A halfback's block can only result in a goal if the player was holding the halfbacks' crossbar at the crucial moment.

The Bowl in Table Football

Very famous in table football, the bowl occurs when a ball goes in and out of the goal. This is considered a goal. The following kickoff is therefore carried out normally.

Fishing

In the rules of foosball, fishing is considered prohibited. When we talk about "fishing" in foosball, it means recovering the ball from the goal before it falls into the table. This either deducts a point from the opponent or adds one to yourself.

Lobs

A shot is called a lob when the ball goes over the goalpost and is worth two points. On defense, only the goalkeeper is allowed to reverse to block a lob.

Dead Ball

A ball is dead when there are only two balls left to play and the score is tied. The team that scores with the dead ball wins the start.

- Official rules prohibited for foosball

The rules of foosball prohibit the following practices and behaviors:

  • - Hindering or distracting the opponent
  • - Blowing on the ball or keeping it under a crossbar for more than 10 seconds
  • - Moving the foosball violently during matches
  • - Hitting the uprights
  • - Scoring the last ball with the half-backs, which loses the player two points.

There you have it, you know all the rules and basic shots for playing foosball! All you need to do now is find a foosball table, ask a few friends to play, and you're ready to practice with several rounds, or even several matches, score goals, get a good score, and become unbeatable at miniature football.
